Wetmore Tire and Auto is a TIA-certified tire dealership and a Michelin Alliance dealer. Wobbly wheels made straight since 1928 is our slogan. In an era when Detroit-area garage owners tried everything from balloons and banners to Niagara Falls vacation sweepstakes to draw attention to their businesses, Roy C. Wetmore’s garage on Woodward Ave. had them beat. Wetmore’s advertising was of the point-of-purchase variety and has been seen 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year since 1928. Perched atop the corner of the second floor in an open-air alcove rests a wobbly-wheeled vintage relic with a purposely misaligned front end, its front wheels perpetually rotate above motorists courtesy of a belt-drive system, powered by an electric motor. The wobble is accentuated by a white stripe painted on the tire tread, and just so this road-side attraction won’t be missed, the “car-on-the roof” protrudes about a third of the way out of the second story. Owner Chris Lynch’s family purchased Wetmore Tire and Auto in 1975.
